Hi,
I have recently noticed white fibres pertruding from the side of one of my cories. I havent added anything to the tank recently and i cant think where it's come from. Im not 100% sure it's velvet as i have no experience of it but its spread across one side of him and bits fall off when he swims (with difficulty). The top part of his tail also appears to have vanished. I will post a pic shortly.
If anyone can help i would be very greatful,
Thanks

Yeah, doesnt help if i dont know exactly whats wrong with him tho.

He's in a very bad way now, dont think he'll recover. I think it could be fungus, he could have got damaged in my powerhead and the fungus may have then grown on the wound  Pic....

Do you add salt to your tank mabe its that burning its skin add some melafix that might help cure him also try stress coat they work well together

No i dont add salt but i've managed to remove the fungus (if thats what it is) and have covered him in stress coat, i know this isnt a medication but i dont think there's much else i can do.
Thanks for your help

Hi R3GG :)

Your cory has a bacterial infection.

Sometimes these move quickly and sometimes slowly. They are caused by bacteria that is always present in a tank, but which take advantage of a fish that has undergone some kind of stress and has a weakened immune system.

Stressors include, but are not limited to, overcrowding, high nitrites, sudden rise in water temperature, infrequent water changes and gravel vacuumings, low oxygen content in the water, uneaten food in the tank, or aggressive tank mates.

Please do an immediate big water change and gravel cleaning. Gradually change your water temperature to no higher than 24 degrees C. (75-76 degrees F.) and add an airstone to give your tank additional oxygen content. Doing these things will slow the growth of the bacteria and help keep the disease from spreading to the other fish. If you have a quarantine tank, it would be a good idea to move your sick fish there for treatment.

If you were an American I would prescribe antibiotics, but since you are in the UK, I suggest you get either Waterlife’s Myxazin or Interpet’s AntiFungus and Finrot. I understand that King British also has a good product to help with this.

If the cory responds to treatment, continue it for longer then you think necessary since bacteria can mutate if it is not completely cured.

Good luck and I hope your fish recovers soon.

Hi, sorry i couldnt reply for a couple of days, the cory died the night i posted :byebye: You've been very helpful tho, cheers for all the input, my other cory looks very healthy at the moment. The only explaination i can think of is that this one got tangled up with my powerhead as i've considered all of the possible causes you came up with inchworm and i dont think it could have been any of them (although they were very good points and im sure they apply to many people with a similar problem). It happened suddenly almost overnight. My water temp is fine, i do weekly 25% water changes i dont feed them too much and i occasionally turn the airstone on :/
Thanks again ;)
