Hi
I read that you can feed bettas peas for constipation. First; how do you know that your fish is constipated? Second; Do Bettas really eat peas? Third; How do you feed the peas to Bettas? Some how I can't see Fred ever eating his veggies!

well i suggest you tell fred that he cant leave the table until every last bit of veg has gone  , bettas bellies swell up a lot when constipated, they may also loose the balance for swimming which is when the consipated area is pushing on the swim bladder causing a condition called swim bladder.

firstly use a garden pea not from a tin but frozen is good, boil it for 20 secs in the microwave and then peel off the skin, crush in your fingers and add to the tank, whats not eaten in 20 mins remove with a net

What I do is I take a frozen pea, add it to some warm or hot water, until it's quite soft, then I squish it a little to get the good stuff to ooze out of the skin (hehe), then I pinch off teeny tiny little pieces (not of the skin) and drop them one-by-one into the tank. If the pinch is too big, Sweeney will have difficulty biting it, but if it's too tiny, it sticks to my finger and refuses to roam freely in the tank, lol. Sweeney has never eating more than half a pea, and usually his belly starts getting big before we're even through a quarter of a pea, lol

Peas are also good as treats and as a constipation prevention method (I think, anyway). Sweeney has never had constipation, yet he gets a pea every couple of weeks (at least) anyways.

my livingston loves his vegis. me i just defrost the pea inbetween my fingers by rolling it it helps me remove the skin too. then use tweesers to take about a quarter of the pea broken down to betta bites and livingston has his meal. then i normally let him sit for a few days with out food to clean him out.
mine also eats lettuce and i have heard avacdo before as well. but i don't eat advacado so it makes no sence to me to buy it just for a tiny fish

My Betta used to love peas. He would only normally eat things from surface but would happily swim down to the gravel pick up a chunk of pea.

All I did was if i ever cooked any for my self i would save one for him, peel it and drop a quarter in at a time for him.

:good: Thanks for the help. I am going to try feeding him a pea. An ounce of pea is better than a pound of constipated fish.
