V2 Skimmer

Hi all,

I bought a 2nd hand (basically brand new) skimmer at the weekend but my god doesn't the pump take up alot of room in the tank don't think theres much that can be done really is there?

Anyway the worst part is that it's VERY noisy, is there anything I can do as the tank is in my room and the noise is slightly deafening and I may struggle to get to sleep

If I put a kink in the air pipe it reduces the noise a bit more and the more I kink it the quieter it gets but it's then getting closer to stopping its job.

I do have another air tube I can use from an old pump that i can twist at the top to reduce the air gap but is that ideal cos blocking the air is stopping its job again isnt it

Any ideas?

for the pump yes its a brick lol, i changed it into like a normal powerhead with the strainer on the bottom. then for the 2 air holes i put air pipes on them with the venturi they give u from the the pump, i have one in my bedroom and i sleep fine with it lol. all i hear the the bubbles.

Do you have any pics on what you done mate? I need to do something bigtime lol

I can change the pump to 1 of my powerheads but I doubt it's strong enough.

The noise is coming from the actual skimmer and the air cord attached to it, if I kink it then it's better

No it wont be cos the pump is a 2100 lph pump i think.

i plummed mine in differnly a bit as i couldnt stop the pipe kinking so this how mines layed out.
The one with venturi stops a air noise then the other its where water just comes out randomly so its piped into the tank.

I've reduced the noise a little but it's stopping the full circulation of the main part in the skimmer / tube. Is this ok? I can reduce it even more but it looks like it's reducing it more and more.

Whats the limit to go to and is there anything else I can do to help the noise?

N1Z - What's the point in using that little cup holder like thing? I had that in the box when i bought my skimmer 2nd hand but I never received any instructions. It looks like you have put the main tube into it but I can't see the point as it takes up more space?

Also is your air pipe in the water And is it essential to use the section that stops the flow of the water from the pump? I haven't added mine on as it takes up loads my room, I guessed stopping the skimmer when taking the waste away would be ok?

Mine also is a bit noisy but like N1z I put a venturi thing on the pipe from the pump. With regards to the pump I hid it behind some LR (but I do have lots of LR!). On the outlet hose I actually sealed the joint with silicone as the odd drip was coming from it.

A quick question... am i under skimming as it is this full after 4 days?

Mike, did you twist the venturi to reduce air and quieten the noise down?

no its not under skimming if its filling up every 4 days ive got my to skim to every 2 days now so should have much less organics.
Saying that greg mikes is a 400 like mine. try the venturi i gave u m8. see how things work out or! take the skimmer down to the LFS and test it there! then u cn tell wheterh its working fully..

not really lol, turn the water level tap that way more water stays in producing better skimming, saying that there isnt much going on in ur tank right now so there wont be much to skim. Awsome is it any better? im out down pub tonight but might catch u later.

Mike can i see a full pic of ur tank bet it looks fully loaded (awsome) with 50 kilos of LR!

Soz I was talking about my skimming I ment it was 1cm full (as in the pic) after 4 days, so I think I am under skimming!

With regards to my venturi thing I only have it slightly turned as the more it is tightened = less bubbles.

Here is a pic of my tank for you N1z, the tank shot was taken 6 weeks ago (need to update), the LR now has lots of colour but have a problem with some sort of green algae growning on the rock. The shot of my cabinet was taken last night, i have an overloaded set up to keep the heat down, there is another post about it! Would love to see your tank too mate.

oooh looking nice! doing a reef? and a regal tang hows the fella doing? tbh i have no proper way of cooling this year as im poor as hell and feel there is not much need atm usual temp for me atm is 27. And yes it probs is turn the water level thing so that the bubbles rise to say just below half way in the up rise tube. thats where mine is works a treat.

I would love to go reef but I dont think my lights arnt up to it. I dont think I can get any soft corals with my T6 lights? I did get two tube worms yesterday though and they look great Also have the problem that I dont think you can upgrade the trigon lights

I am going to sort my skimmer out now...
