Have had the skimmer running for 3 months with no real problems, but have noticed what I think is a layer of protien on the surface of the water, would this be normal or is the skimmer under performing or should i move the pump so the pump is taking water from the surface into the skimmer? rather than the pump being completely submersed?

The skimmer may be under performing, but fixing it may just be a matter of a little tweak or two. How often do you have to clean the collection cup?

Even if the skimmer is functioning properly you can still get a "film" on the surface if you have low agitation... Point a powerhead at the surface instead of monkeying with the skimmer.

once again cheers ski for the info, skimmer seems to have settled a bit to much lately so probably need to up the setting slightly as well as re direct the power head
