I have an AquaTop 400 canister filter on my 75 gallon tank which is equipped with a UV chamber. I'd never used it, I bought the filter because I liked it for other reasons. But a couple of weeks ago I suddenly had an algae bloom in my tank that really clouded my water. I turned the UV light on and the tank was cleared in a little over a day. It really works. I shut it back off though because I've read they can sometimes melt the walls of the filter chamber.

I have always had UV's in my aquariums, they are in use 12 hours out of 24 (on overnight).

So far....quickly touches wood....I have not had any issues with unwanted blooms or disease or illness in my fish in many many years.

They aren't the "be all and end all" in fishkeeping and I totally understand some fishkeepers being hesitant or even disbelieving of their benefits but as far as I am concerned, they do work really quite well.

They are not, however, an excuse or reason to skip the weekly maintenance. They support the maintenance routine, they will never replace it.

Well, like I said this is the first time I've used the UV option. Also the first time I've had an algae bloom with this tank. I have slacked some on water changes the previous few weeks due to being very busy but we seem to be back to normal now.
