does anyone where i might be able to get some of this plant? anyone with experience with it? thank you ..dan

i assume you read about it from the tropica website?

looks like such a wicked plant.. i would assume its hard to obtain. Its interesting because its such a unique plant that you would think it would be hard to grow, but from reading over the article on tropica it seems that it would thrive better in a low tech tank. Would be interesting to see it eat.. :hey:

Actually i read about it in my Aquatic Gardener Journal..it is quite interesting ,and im looking for a new foreground plant.Although i did also see it on the Tropica website later..thanks dan

I got hold of a few pots of U. graminifolia in the UK through a local Tropica stockist, although the first time I ordered it, it was unavailable. I think I just got lucky on the second attempt.

The tropica site says it likes lower light until it gets established, but this tank is high light (about 4wpg)
with co2 at about 30 - 35ppm. It's been in my new tank for about two and a half weeks now and seems to be doing fine.

I'm thinking I should have planted it in smaller clumps than I actually did. Tropica's advice is to divide each pot into 6 - 8 bits, I only did 4.

It's almost fully covering the area where I want it in the tank and I'm already considering thinning it out in a week or so and dividing each of the tufts into 2 or 3. Whatever I have spare can go towards my next tank.
Or my LFS has offered to buy any I dont need.

The shrimp in my tank love it and are constantly cleaning it, occasionally they do uproot one of the clumps, but not very often and it's happening less now as it's getting more of a hold in the substrate (ADA Aquasoil).

Thats good to hear Mr.G
im glad you like it..that only makes me want some even more now..hope i can get some in the states though..

someone should grab a bunch, grow it, and let us buy it for a cheap price ;)

Who'd sell 'gold dust' cheaply :hey:

I wouldn't get too focused on the carniverous nature of this plant. The small, opaque bladders it uses to trap it's 'prey' are at most 1mm across. I got some cyclops enter my shrimp tank (I think on some moss) and the  in me wanted to see the plant 'feed' on them, however even these are too large.

The carniverous activities of this plant are really of a microscopic nature !
Which in many ways is good, we quite often see posts about fish eating plants, but I can just imagine the 'My plant ate my fish ...' posts

Although I've only grown it for a couple of weeks and only had it in a tank with shrimp and otto's. I would seriously doubt it would do well in a tank with plecs, even after getting established/well rooted. In fact even smaller bottom dwellers like Cory's would probably not be a good idea.

The plant would just get damaged .... if you want to grow a nice lawn in your garden, you wouldn't invite the local rugby team to come play on it ! :hyper:

So far the shrimp and otto's have not caused any damage to it (apart from some initial uprooting) but the shrimp in particular are very good at cleaning any waste that gets down in the clumps. You'd need something to do the cleaning, as the traditional 'gravel vac' isn't really going to do the job !

Hi All,

I’ve just acquired some Utricularia graminifolia for my tank, I had to buy 6 plants as that was the minimum order, I now have two that I don’t require and I’m trying to sell on, I know that sound bad but I can’t afford to give them away as they charged me £10 each… although I’m told that’s cheap…

If you’re interested e-mail me and I’ll send full details and pics.

Thanks,

Luke (UK)
