Hi there,

I am still weighing up what fert method to use it's either ei or seachem stuff but was wondering if the water changes needed are as big with seachem stuff compared to those that are needed with ei

Regards Darren

I use the seachem stuff, but have still tried to get into the habit of doing 50% weekly water changes as I'm shortly to be switching over to EI. However, I don't believe that there is the same requirement to do large WC with seachem because you are not (unless you have amended your routine) overdosing the ferts if you are following the quidelines on the bottle.

The point of the big WC on EI is that you are dosing an excess of all nutrients to ensure that the plants have sufficient to grow, but you need to remove that excess weekly.

If you have a tank of any sufficient size, the Seachem route will end up expensive in the long run.

Hi thanks for that,

I really don't know what way to go I have been reading on the net and I think I am more unsure back to reading.....

The reason regarding the water changes is we are in a massive drought (our city's water storages are at 9%) and not sure I can justify such massive water changes weekly.

Regards Darren

Water changes are relative to CO2 in the main, although as UE says above EI does use them for dilution.

If you go a non CO2 route with lowish light, nutritious substrate and lean dosing then you would use the zero water changes route.

If this is for you then you need to make sure that you don't skimp on the substrate. It has to be something very good like ADA AS as this will be the main fertiliser for the tank.
