I am scrubbing clean the old 10gallon tonight, it houses 15+ guppies and the algae growth is phenomenol every week! I am trying to grow a moss carpet in there but want to use this form of elodea that grows in the pond to create a really bushy tank..

As I'm not substrating or injecting carbon dioxide, the elodea is blatantly the best weed to use, but is alright to use the stuff growing in a pond outside in a tropical aquarium?

And if so.. what sort of treatment should i give it other than rinsing it?

Cheers.

did it come from a pond?

how did u treat it before planting it?

sweet. cheers.

I've done the pond dipping bit, now to try and get all the pond algae n critters off!

Take pictures when you get a chance im very curious as im pretty unsure of what you guys are talking about. But it sounds like your goal is the same as mine, i use java moss and just get head aches.

i think you are wanting to use Elodea canadensis in a tropical tank.
if so it will not survive for long as it is a coldwater plant.
what you want for a tropical tank is what is called elodea but is in fact Egeria densa (sometimes called elodea densa)
this will thrive in a tropical tank but will die in a pond.

if you are puting any wild plant into a tank the best thing to do is a bleach dip,
this will kill and nasties (bacteria, bugs etc) and also any algae spores.

5% bleach solution and immerse the plants for 2 mins, no longer or you will kill them
fragile plants such as vallis should only be done for a min or so.
google bleach dip plants for loads of hints and tips on this subject

A quick googleoscopy provided me with several images that looked like that for the scientific name you provided. This is not what i thought it was are we all on the same page here?

This is supposedly the pond / cold water version its much smaller i think (not length thats not important but girth and petal size)

first 2 pics appear to be egeria densa
last one is deffo elodea canadensis

when i worked in the trade it was canadensis we sold for ponds & densa for tropical tanks.
