I have been using hair netting to hold down Riccia to some peices of slate in my tank. Unfortunetly I came in yesterday evening to find one my my corys had managed to get his dorsal fin caught up in one and was close to death. I untangled it and put him in a breeding trap to recover but he was dead this morning (not sure how long he was trapped but I guess the stress of the event was just to much for him).

The netting was very tight across the rock but the Riccia had lifted it slightly. I guess he caught it with his dorsal fin at just the wrong angle and got caught :(

This could have just been a 1 in a million thing but I've removed the rest of the netting now just in case and thought it was worth mentioning for anyone else that has fish similar to corys so the same thing doesnt happen to them.

I'm really gutted as well, especially as it was the biggest Cory in there and it wasmy fault that it died.

On a seperate note though floating riccia is great for fry.

It is actually not a 1 in one million shot. Corydoras have very stiff rays in both their pectoral and dorsal fins. Hobbiests are often told, and with good reason, to never net a corydora. When stressed, the cory responds by stiffening the fins, which then often get stuck in netting. A warning like this should probably also extend to those who keep tanks with corydoras and plants that need net securement (Riccia, moss).

I had a hairnet holding down HC on driftwood and my gourami got stuck twice the second time he managed to damage his fin which has healed up. After that I fixed the hairnet even more than before.

I had a clown pleco get caught and die.
I've never tied Riccia down since.
Come to think of it...I dont even have any Riccia anymore.
