I got a water butt yesterday which holds 130 litres. I put a water change full of water in there last night to warm up and so that I could treat it all at once rather than individual buckets.

My only concern is the new plastic smell of the water butt itself. I have tasted the water (never used before) and it also seems a little plasticy!

It has been swilled out thoroughly with clean water but should this be ok to put in my tank?

I have used these and the plastic smell goes away eventually if you leave them to air for a bit. I can't tell you how long as it seems to vary depending on the type of plastic used.
I am sure that someone more experienced than me can tell you if it would harm the fish, but mine have survived thus far.

For those who don't know what they are, they are essentially a water barrell with a small tap. They look like a beer keg.

Will allow me to fill up 130 litres and treat replacement tank water at one time, getting it all to the same temperature etc.

Ahh, I see. You are using this for water changes. I use about 10 one gallon jugs :hyper:

I'm not sure about the smell. I know what you are talking about, and I don't know if or HOW it would affect fish. I don't think it would harm them. What was in the barrel before you got it?
