Hi vantgE :)

You are right to use both Maracyn and Maracyn 2 together to fight Columnaris Flexibacter, because there is often a secondary infection active too. With this combination, you might not need salt, but I don't think it would hurt either.

Alternatively, you might want to do salt dips rather than add the salt to the medicated water. I've found them to be very effective in the treatment of severe bacterial infections.

In addition, be sure to keep your water very clean and well oxygenated. Gradually lowering the temperature to no more than 75-76 degrees F. (24 C.) is helpful too.

Good luck. I hope your fish recover soon.

Thankyou inchworm,
I had already had salt in the tank before she got the columaris, and needed to know if I could add the maracyn or I should do several large watt5er shanges first

Hi vantgE :)

If you haven't yet added the medicine, it would be good to do a big water change and a good bottom cleaning to reduce the number of harmful bacteria in the tank. The lowered temperature and increased oxygen content will help by slowing their reproduction.

Columnaris is often a deadly form of bacterial infection that can sweep through a tank rapidly killing everything it attacks. If this hasn't happened, you might just have some other bacterial infection which can be readily cleared up.

In any case, do frequent water changes and replace the medication as needed, and do not stop treatment until the entire course, as directed on the package, has been given, even if the symptoms clear up. This is to lessen the possibility of a strain of bacteria developing that is resistant to this medicine.

Yeah thanks she got columnaris, after being attacked she was in her hospital tank already, and I did fifty percent before adding medication,

But its all over, she died
