My well established 70 litre tank has suddenly had a surge in nitrate and nitrite levels. My new 125l has been cycling for 10 days or so and all I'm waiting on is for the nitrate to start to rise, ammonia and nitrite are ~ 0.

I intend to transfer the fish to the new tank (3 platies, 4 tetras, 2 danios). My question (finally :)) is should I put ammonia remover in my fluval external filter to prevent a spike, or will this just hinder the filter maturing? A second question is should I put it in one or both nides of the filter?

Thanks in advance

I would ask this in beginners section, good luck.

I hope you are not removing and replacing your filter media (blue or whatever) are you?

Just perform a few water changes a day. This will reduce the nitrite and nitrate levels. I would also reduce the feedings to smaller amounts and maybe every other day.

Danios are hardy fish, so they should survive the cycle. If your tetra is either a neon or cardinal, then those require a more stable tank, so should be introduced several weeks after the tank has fully cycled.
