hi all

my molly is near the top of the water violently shaking her head from side to side - like a rock star shakes their head to their songs! her head touches the top of the ater and shakes from left to right very very quickly - to look at her body appears to be normal - no growths, spots etc.....whats wrong....?
thanks

Is her tail held tight and her back fin lowered?
And that shaking sounds like shimmy behavior. Check for stress factors (fish that are attacking her, water chemistry imbalance, requirement of salt)

hi thanks for fast reply...her body is lowered and she shakes her tail - at the moment she is now swimming around the tank - with the shaking behaviour slightly present

Body as in the tail side? That sounds pretty bad if she holds the tail lowered.

ohh

Well, I am no expert and you should wait until the people around here tell you exactly what it is.
Until then, you should provide water parameters:
PH
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate

Fish in tank and tank size (seems your signature provides that info).

It could be stress, could be shimmy, could be old age... But a water change would be good, especially if tank isn't cycled or if you are not sure about the values of the parameters.

not got stats yet - have to wait until tomorrow and do a 50% water change - its too late at night to be doing a water change - kids are asleep :(
hope my molly is ok - i read online some mollies do this as a 'dance' for male attention?

At least put her in a separate tank, otherwise the rest of the fish will find her an easy prey and start pecking.
Should get fresh water for her as soon as possible.
And weren't males supposed to do that dance for females? Females couldn't give a scale about males (in the case of livebearers).

ok thanks very much for your advice...will update tomorrow once water change completed.

Any update on the Molly?

Hi all

Done a 60% water change and added some anti slime and velvet to the tank - as last night before i went to bed, i noticed that the molly had a bit of white velvet on her side. Since doing the water change, the molly has calmed down alot compared to last night - shes not hovering at the top of the water and shaking frantically. Now she seems to be 'wiggling' / shaking still but it is at a much slower pace and she does actually take a break from shaking.

Does anyone think she will survive? or does it sound like she has something incurable?

thanks again

If she's standing still and wiggling, that's still bad.
Velvet may be curable but from what I've heard, you need to keep her in a dark area too, as velvet likes light.

Also, the danger of ammonia is still very high. You really need to test your water and let us know exactly what the results are as her symptoms can be due to a number of things
