Please help me
My guppy is on one side like he has had a stroke, do I put him out of his misery or is there something I can do? He did go for breakfast!! Help me!

Urgh! Are there any other symptoms you can post?? Any abnormality in mouth/tail? Any scales protruding? Does he ever right himself?? How fast are his gills moving? If you have a test kit, do a water check and post the stats...If he's eating, thats a good sign, but if you can get some more info up, might be able to help more....

Hi
He is eating, he seemed fine yesterday. He seems okay other than his left hand side isnt working, he is using the other side and sometimes dives down and spends a lot of time in the bubble section, for air maybe or bouyancy? I only have 3 male guppys and they werent fighting and the other two are leaving him alone. Theres no sign of injury or disease, can fish have a stroke? because that is what it looks like?
Sue :(

Ok, next unpleasant thought...This COULD be swimbladder (tenses for the onslaught of derisory replies from people) but that usually makes fish swim head or tail down...From what I've just asscertained by trawling google, it might be a variation on the theme...an internal infection affecting muscular control and buoyancy. In effect, quite like a stroke in humans (in a way...apparently fish can't suffer stroke in the same way a human does - correct me if I'm wrong someone?)

Whatever the cause, it would probably be a sensible plan to isolate your sick gupp in a hospital tank if possible, and therefore prevent a possible spread of infection to your other fish. Try and get some water stats posted...that'd really help.

This is only my opinion, and what I've found from google...so i'm afraid it's a long way from definitive :/

EDIT Check this site out... http://www.provet.co.uk/fish/fishswim.htm

Just finished reading your other thread...No test kit, so we can stop badgering you for water stats...Test kit would be a good investment btw :X Have you got access to another tank you can use for treating him?

Hi
No other tank either, I have one of those small hexagonal tanks and these are my first fish, they were doinf great for 6 months then lost one last week, he seemed to get a really bloated stomach, then this! I went away for a few days and put in some slow release food and I think that killed the first one but have been back over a week and the other 3 seemed fine until this morning, don't know what else to do but its amazing how upsetting this can be I love the little buggers!!

*nods* you do get quickly attached to the little swines...I had big guilt when my 1st lot died. Anyhow. If you don't have a hospital tank, you may want to treat the whole tank with Melafix (the fish keeping equivilant of WD-40 - universal cure-all) If not, small daily water changes would be advisable, ensuring that you are using a good brand of water conditioner...

What type of filter do you have? What temperature is your water at?

Right so I have done a small water change and as I said when I put my hands in a cup him he swam better in the shallow water AND had a mega suck on my fingers even though there was an escape route, could he need salt? I have a Cascade 300 filter and the only stuff I have to put in, which I have just done wit te water change, is Nutrafin Cycle and Nutrafin Aqua plus!! Not sure that I can do any more, I think they are all getting fed up with the HUGE eyeball pressed against the glass!! Thank you by the way for your help, i really needed to talkw to someone :)

No problem with the replies - it's what the forums are here for! Just hope it will help a bit...

Where are you from? Is there anyone you know that you could borrow a hospital set up from?

Okies...Those cascade filters are good (I've got one :) ) Did you leave the charcoal filter cartridge in?? If you did, and you're not using meds, it's a bit of a waste of the carbon :/ you could always put some other filter media in there instead...

What are you feeding your fish on? If it's just flake, this can lead to problems (as I only found out myself recently :X ) Try some shelled peas (Frozen peas cooked for a few minutes, shells removed and crush the inside...let it cool and drop 'em in...) or some frozen bloodworm...

As for poor Mr. Floaty, try and get some Melafix in there, regular water changes...but most of all, get your water checked! Your LFS should be able to do this for you if you take them a sample, but a comprehensive test kit is a worthy investment...I use a Freshwater Pharmaceuticals Master Test Kit - seems to do the job ok

How big is your tank btw?

-_-
My tank is ( i think!) 25 gallons, its only 16" tall and 13" wide, hexagonally!. I was doing really well for the forst 6 months, bought my fish from a chap that sells them to pet shops as I asked in one shop where to get them and he new the guy who was a couple of doors away, so they were really sturdy little chaps, and I have done 100% water changes every 10 days, yes 100%!! read it was the best thing to do and they were still fine!!!! Haven't ever tested the water :/ and as I said only ever had these four male guppies so on hindsight I think I was lucky!! We are moving abroad in June so I was asking around to rehome them, am now worried I might not find them a home if they may be ill, am near Watford.what a nightmare, I keep checking on him :( Am now waiting for uproar from 100%water change :fun:

Sheesh! 100% is something I've never heard of doing...was advided to do 20-25% changes every week! Can imagine that 100% would put the fish under a hell of a lot of stress - being moved from one place to another, then being put into brand new water...The bacteria colonies in your filter probably aren't too happy with the situation either...As far as I'm aware (and again I must state that this is only my opinion) the water needs continuity to mature and stabalise....Could someone else maybe advise on this??

Hmm...I'm a little too far away to borrow a hospital tank from  Maybe the person that sold you a tank could help?? I've managed to save a poorly fish or two using isolation - it's well worth it....When you move, advertise on here...you'll quickly find a good home I'm sure :)

:alien: I know 100% water change seemed crazy to me too BUT I read online that some Professor lady did this all the time and as I was a complete novice I copied and I have to say the fish always seemed fine and they always had some food when back in and it was okay!!! I think, when we move, I will maybe transfer to coldwater fish as I find the upkeep of these littleones very confusing and at present heartbreaking!! I haven't really got anyone here to assist so will see how he does and take it from there, if 3 or 2 of them are fine I will rehome them soon. Unfortunately we are too far away from family to assist and we are going too far for them to come with us. Thanks you again for your help and for not being judgemental!!! :-(

I forgot to say, good luck with impending marriage, we have been married now for 10 years in April and it's great  I hope you'll be very happy :D

Thanks Sue...:) Plans going well, so *fingers crossed* everything should be OK...I'd spend a bit of time looking thru the beginners forum for advice on water changing...In the livebearer forum, ask Annastasia or Blitztidus for Guppy advice - they've helped me a lot! Keeping coldwater fish at least will remove the stress of powercuts! we've had a couple and it's a NIGHTMARE!

Might be worth posting on the forum where you live...then if anyone local can help you, it's that much easier to find them :)

ps I don't "do" judgemental - I've always found this forum to be very friendly and helpful :) Besides which, I'm in no position to judge!

Well I am going to groom my dogs, they are sooo much easier than fish, I will look out for you again and maybe my little fish will be okay, will also change to less water change!!!! :-(
Thanks, take care
Sue xx
