Help ! fish sitting so i havent got a clue. I think its a dogfish that keeps getting sucked to filter at the back, managed to release him by moving the water near him and he swam off and hid. Happened twice in a few hours. doesnt look like his tail fin is working properly, looks stuck together. could somebody please advise as i dont want to keep disturbing the tank :(

Hi there.

As it's not your tank, it's a bit difficult. In normal circumstances (although I'm not experienced with marine fish; if it's a dogfish, it must be a marine/salty tank) I'd recommend a large water change.

The clamped tail fin is a sympton of some kind of illnes or disease; normal healthy fish do not get sucked into filters; they can swim away.

Any chance of a pic? (you'd need to upload it to a hosting site, like Flickr or Photobucket first)

How long until the owner is back?

I'm afraid there's not really much advice I can give in the circumstances :(

Link doesn't work for me. Have you got it viewable to friends only or something?
Yeah, doesn't work for me either.

Not that I think a pic will help in this situation anyway :(

sorry yes its veiwable to all now. really dont know what to do for best,m if he is ill is it better to leave him to float to top or can he be taken out to recover ?

kinda put me off my lunch taking the pic too  poor little fella

If you don't know how to change the water, don't take him out because he'll still need the right balance of salt etc in whatever other place you put him in. Fingers crossed for the poor guy!

Unfortunately you can't take the fish out to recover; it needs the heating and filtation system to keep it alive and wouldn't last long without them.

As awful as it is, I honestly don't think there's much you can do. Maybe switch the lights off for the rest of the day to give the fish some rest and don't feed the tank, so the filter has a chance to clear any nasties in the water without being overwhelmed, is about the best advice I can give you right now...

Horrible to keep having to take him off the filter, i really dont want the others going into shock because of me keep fiddling with the tank. Hoping he will be alright, has happily been swimming around for the rest of the week.

Thanks for that, its on a timer so light not coming on till tonight but might switch it off anyway to see if it helps, i know i cant switch off filters and pumps so will be just fingers crossed i think :(

Lets keep our hopes up; you never know, he may be back to normal in a day or two.

I do feel for you; it's awful when things happen to other people's animals when you're in charge of them. But all fishkeepers lose fish from time to time; there's very likely nothing you could have done, so try not to feel too bad.
