i have just set up the fluval 205 external filter, but im worried that its not working correctly. all the internals are present and the 2 pipes are connected and routed to each end of the tank. however when its on, it doesnt seem as though theres any water being circulated through the filter and pushed out of the other side. when i rapidly push/pull the 'starter' plug it seems as though the water is coming through the other end (i can see bubbles and movement)

please advise asap as my fish are inside and i dont want anything to happen :(

The filter probably has air trapped in it and this is stopping the water from going through. Turn the filter off and put the return/ outlet hose into a bucket on the ground. Allow the bucket to fill up with water and then put the hose back in the tank. Turn the filter on and see what happens.
If it still doesn't work then turn the filter off and empty it out. Take the top off the canister and turn the top upside down. You should be able to see a clear round disc and the impellor (magnet with plastic blades on) under the clear disc. Plug the motor into the power point and turn it on for a few seconds. You should be able to see the impellor spinning around. If it doesn't spin around then the motor or impellor is stuffed and needs replacing.

Hi thanks for the reply.

I think it is now working, all the crap is being pulled in thru one end, but on the end which pumps water back into the tank, its not very visible, although when i put my hand near it i can feel a little movement. ive not had an external filter before but is that right the way its going at the moment?

Glad you got it working Maz. I was getting worried I'd jinxed you somehow! If you rock the filter very gently you might knock out any remaining air. Basically it should be running nice and quitely with a slight hum. If there's air trapped it might make a bit of a buzzing noise.

I have a new external fluval filter too and had to pull the end that pipes water back in to the top of the water so get some movement.
