I just took out my natural lighting and replaced with 1 -18" high intensity actinic lamp 420nm on one side and 1 -18" 50/50 combination of 6500k trichromatic daylight phosphor and actinic 420 phosphor combo on the other side.

I am attempting to increase the life that has been florishing under natural light on my LR.

I have a stock hood, i'm not too impressed with it, but i think it'll do for now.

what ramifications will i have dividing my tank as i have with the different spectrum of lighting????

should i consider upgrading to a whole new hood????

any advice would be appreciated.

Kim,
IF you are going light,(pardon the pun), on corals for a bit, I would have gone with a pair of 10,000k lights.
What you are running now is also fine, however the colt and any other softies you have will generally do well under fuller spectrums such as the 10,000k.

One thing we all tend to forget is that our tank inhabitants view light differently that we do.

The blues(actinics) that we find to be less intense, are viewed as full daylight to corals. In the wild reef, blue is the spectrum that penetrates to the depths that corals live at.

For a tank lightly stocked with corals, I would choose the 10,000k bulbs. They offer both the blue spectrum, and much of the red, providing corals with the spectrum they like, and produce more lumens for our viewing pleasure.
