I want to make my tank better for keeping plants and I will be starting by changing the substrate with an underlying fertilising substrate which is then covered with gravel.

Out of this sort of stuff..... http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.php?...x&cPath=220

which would be the best to get, and roughly how much would I need for a tank that's 60X30cm ?

I've already decided on what I am changing to top layer to, but I don't know which nutrient substrate to get....

The ADA aquasoil is best (AS), the 9L will suffice for £27.99.

The Eco-complete (EC) is good aswell.

The tropica substrate is ok aswell (on 2nd page) this will need capping with gravel or sand.

A cheap nutrient substrate is better than nothing, but paying out more will get you the best results. It also means you dont have to worry to much about missing a dose in the water column as the substrate can take the strain.

yeah i think to be honest i'd rather foot the cost and reap the benefits, especially as i won't be able to upgrade my lighting until another couple of months :good:
