Hey guys!

Well, I picked up some Discus today. I hope everything will be okay! I got two, because I didn't want too much of a mini-cycle. I also got some mature media, and used some brackish media (been told the change from brackish to fresh would kill the bacteria but gave it a try anyways.) I got two for pretty good prices. One Albino Snakeskin, for 40 dollars CND. It is about 5" so it was a steal! Second was the smaller Tangerine Dream, for 35 dollars CND, still an okay price for Discus though! Pictures to come!

Why would you use brackish media????

Don't you already have at least one other tank? You could have run the filters on that for a while....

Its also a bit risky to introduce the Discus first, but with mature media it should work out ok.

Hope you matched the breeders water parameters and introduced them to the tank very slowly. Good luck.

Yep, I did, don't worry. I actually only have a brackish tank at the moment, and had 6 red eye tetras in the tank beforehand. When I go to pick up my other Discus from a private breeder, I will be getting more bacteria, just to be safe.

Just a little more news.

They have really colored up since getting here, but I think there may be a little problem. How long does it take for them to settle in? I got them last night. I fed them some brine shrimp, and they weren't interested. They come out sometimes, but a lot of the time they are hiding in between the terra-cotta pots. They don't look sick, and are showing very good color. Is it just insecurity, because of low numbers? Next Discus should be coming by Monday. Hopefully. Personally I would say they are just a little scared because they are only in a group of two. Don't know what everyone else thinks about this.

Thanks,

DL

i have never kept discus in my life, but i have researched them... so if i am wrong, please forgive me lol :D...

I have heard that discus are shy, so that might be why they aren't settling in right away. I'm pretty sure that if there were more discus in the tank with them, they wouldnt be as shy.

So i dont think there is a major problem, just wait for the other discus to come in :)

Yep. Discus are shy! And they have been a little skittish, they will come out, if I move they run back into the hiding spot. So I think, everything will be okay!

Buy more fish and give them time. One of mine took around a month before it would swim out in the open. Be gentle around the tank with no sudden movements. Make sure you feed the same food as the breeder to start with and try and ensure each fish has chance to eat.

I have my tank on floorboards and not a concrete floor, I found vibrations can spook them to so walk carefully in the room if applicable.

Be careful if your working in the tank around them, if they get really shocked they bolt, and can hit the side of the tank (and decor) and even carry on straight up and out of the tank if you don't have a lip around it etc.

Thanks for the info! They actually do come out quite a bit. It's more when people are around them that they hide.
