Hi, just added my second dose of treatment no 9 to tank, changed 30 % of water before and did a gravel vac, tested water after and all ok, no ammonia or nititrite, goldfish looking much better, swimming around much more, popeye about the same, possibly slight improvement. I have just noticed though that the edges of tail fin and a couple of other fins underneath have a black tinge to the edges, no idea what this is, any ideas? I think this happened with the other goldfish as I was treating with the same meds, am a bit worried now in case this one goes the same way, although he is eating ok and swimming around much more probably me just being paranoid.

well wait until the end of the course of treatment before coming to any conclusions, but if the pop eye doesn't go by the end then it's obviously not pop eye, glad he's looking generally healthier though.

do a google image search for 'fin rot' and let us know if it looks anything like that.

Just googled both, fin rot and black fins, it was definatly fin rot in the first place as it had the white around the edges,as to the black tips, it is saying possible ammonia burn, but their is no ammonia in the tank or nitrite, very confusing!!

if it was fin rot in the first place and it's now gone black after anti-bac meds then i would suggest it's most likley either some residual scarring from the fin rot or just part of the healing process.

thing is, water is now good, fin rot is gone, fish is looking happy and healthy and eating..... things are definatley moving in the right direction even if they aren't completely fixed.

make sure you finish the course of meds though, important to see these things through.

I agree, I think it is definalty something to do with the meds, as the black tips only appeared after I had put in second dose, I think I did read somewhere that black can be a sign of healing in fish. I hope that is right, we can only try to do our best, main thing is goldfish is looking ok, no more treatment for now, after 7 days I can give another does, but i will be going on holiday then, so how much water would you change out, I go on 8th July, 7 days from now takes us to 4th July, would you do gradual changes over the days till I go away?, thus removing most of meds.

i had some opaline gourami's which had black tips to their fins and it never bothered them, i think it was a hang over from before I knew how to look after tanks properly.

do a big water change straight away, like 75%, before you go away do another fairly sizeable change, resist the temptation to give him extra food before you go as he'll only produce extra ammonia and you could risk the tank cycling while you're away.

Big change after 7 days?

Forgot to say my son will be looking after him for a week, well I go away on the tues and he goes joins me on the sunday, he is capable of doing a water change on the saturday before he goes away on the 13th. will this help

ignore my last post, i'm being a retard........ it's friday afternoon and i'm off out tonight, bit giddy!! lol

wait 7 days so you've completed the course of treatment, then just before your hols do the big water change :good:

I know its nearly week-end :good:
Ok, will do a change on Monday, son gonna feed him for a week, I have stressed not to overfeed!! waht do you suggest? he comes out on the sunday. I am back the following sunday, can get a neighbour to feed, but will be back on the sunday, so only 6 days without food

best to leave him for 6 days without food, he'd be fine for up to 2 weeks if pushed, chances of someone overfeeding are considerable and the damage that can be done to your water is significant. for 1 week holidays unless you have fry i always say leave them without any food,

ok, will do, I have used holiday fish food before, but the greedy things ate it all in 2 days, so not good, my neighbour can check every couple of days to see if filter still working, going to turn off light anyway, just have normal daylight then. Will hide fish food!!!

ha ha, it's for the best!

if you want to let your neighour feed him then do, but measure out portions of food and put them in a pill box or just wrap them up in foil, then hide the rest of the food, then they can only feed a small amount so can't do any harm.

Its alright for some, I'm working tonight..and on that note, I need to get my head down for a bit.

Glad your fish seem to be settling down now, if the Interpet No.9 doesn't completely shift it try Myxazin, I treated my betta with No.9 and whilst it obviously had a positive effect on him, it didn't completely clear until I treated him for 5 days with Myxazin.

Thanks will bear that in mind, what were you treating fin rot or Popeye? btw

Think I might have to hide it for my son, i cannot trust him either, he likes to treat the goldfish, saying "daddys home now!!" funny he does not want to be his "dad" when it comes to water changes, will one change be ok? before i go, don't really want son to do one on the saturday if i can help it, he only moans!!

yeah just do a big one before you go away and it'll be fine :good:
