how do you tell when a female platty is pregnant?

Dependant on the colouration on your platy, you may be able to see the black gravid spot. Otherwise, if she is darker, you may just have to go on the size of her, and also whether she is getting terrotorial towards other fish.

Do you have any pictures, that would be the easiest way for me to determine whether your female is pregnant or not.

sorry dont have any pics. she is quite dark in colour..... what is a gravid spot?

A gravid spot is at the bottom of her stomach near her anal fin. Especially with lighter coloured livebearers, you can see this clearly when she is pregnant. As the pregnancy goes on, the gravid spot (black spot) gradually gets bigger and darker..
