Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can help with a problem that one of my female swordtails seems to be having. She seems very off colour (not very interested in food or the other fish in the tank) and, more worryingly, has started to thrash around from side to side and is hiding behind the stones and foilage in the tank. I've also noticed that she seems to have some kind of white cyst below one eye and appears to be opening and closing her mouth a lot more rapidly than the other fish. There are no other odd marks on her skin as far as I can tell. I've attached a photo.

Other info that might be useful - the tank is 60 litres, there are 2 platty, 3 swordtail (1 male, 2 female), 1 gourami and 5 copper tetra. We do a 25% water change ever week. Nitrites at zero. I don't have other measures I'm afraid.

Any ideas?

Rob

Take a sample of your water to the lfs and ask them to write the readings down for you.

For now water change and increase aeration.

Is her tail bent or is it just the angle of the pic.

The white cyst is it hard looking or soft like filled with fluid.
Any redness to the cyst.
Is the cyst beneath the skin or on top.
I would issolate and try a bacterial med.

What does it look like when your fish go to the toilet.
