Hi I hope some one can help with some info on a mollie. We have had a tropical freshwater tank for several years, we used to have lots of fish in it including two tin foil barbs, the barbs grew so big they ended up eating all the other fish.

So we took them to a fish shop, and brought a lot of new fish including guppies, tetras and two mollies. We also had some existing catfish in the tank.

One of the mollies was black and the other white. After a few days the white mollie had a huge swollen eye and was in poor condition, so I have dosed the tank for that, unfortunately whatever infection it was we lost two of our catfish. Now the mollie is swimming with it's tail downwards so that it is virtually swimming in an upright position, and it also has lost condition and has black marks on.

I have just found another dead guppy (already lost two) this one looked fine apart from being dead(if you get what I mean).

does this sound like a bladder problem or something else

Any help much appreciated

Regards

anne

Got a bad bacterial infection in your tank, needs to look at some areas, how many gallons is the tank, full stock list of fish, and need water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Also any fish gone thin, or have a bent spine.

Hi the tank is about 40 gallons.

in the tank are the 2 mollies, 8 neon tetras, 2 zebra danio, 6 guppies, 2 dwarf gouramies, and 3 bristle nosed catfish.

Regarding the water I'll have to check the levels.

The tank has been fine for years, I guess I have imported an infection with the new fish.

None of the rest of the fish look thin or have a bent spine, and they are all hungry, after I introduced the new fish the catfish did develop tiny red sores and are two largest died, the sores have gone but the catfish look a bit pale.

Cheers

Yes its all bacterial need a location for a med.
Once swim bladder has progressed there is no cure, so the ones with swim bladder might not make it, sorry, try some shelled peas.

I have just added some shelled peas, and some Interpet swimbladder treatment to the tank.

I presume a water change tomorrow might be an idea, the tank has become a bit smelly over the last couple of days, so odd as it has been fine for years.

thanks for the advice

cheers

Anne

Bacteria in a tank can cause the tank to smell like rotten eggs and a sulphur smell.

Well the peas are proving popular, everybody is eating them except of course the white molly.

the tank smells a bit fishy (pardon the pun) but not like rotten eggs.

I just hope we don't lose many more fish.

Cheers
