I was wondering when someone was going to challenge my stock levels!
Ok, from the top:
Coldwater and tropical doesnt go
The cold water fish have been living at 26C for the last 7 months and have no problem with it. The angels are in there with them and quite happy about it, as are the BABY Balas. The Danios are big enough not to be considered as food and the whole lot get on great! (Where is the book that says it can't be done?)
clown loaches need bigger groups
I bought three, and am waiting for the shop to get a replacement for the one that died in transit. They are very young and at present measure less than 2 inches. before they are big enough to worry about, the new 8' tank will be up and running. Most people would call it planning ahead.
you say those tanks are only 8" deep the gouramis
The tanks measure 36"x15"x8" and have a capacity of 19 gallons. As the dwarf gourami will only get to 4" full grown, is there a problem? The Pearls are in a corner tank which has 30 gallons. Is there a problem with that?
and bala sharks are to big for them
The balas are not in the small tanks, they are in the 40 gallon and again, they measure just 3 - 4 inches.
male and female better wont mix long term
If they don't, I'll move them! So far I have had no problems with them and they all appear to be happy. When they start to show signs of breeding, then they will be moved into their own tanks, until then, let them play!
the tetras will nip at there fins
All the advice on tetras states that tetras are mostly a problem if they are in small numbers. As yet, neither of the bettas are showing any signs of fin-nipping, and the tetras are happily ignoring them and squabbling amongst themselves.
I think that's the lot. You may have noticed that I am doing my homework here, and one of the reasons for having so many tanks is so that any problems can be dealt with quickly and effectively. Within half an hour I can move all the fish from one tank to another and re-stock with a different combination. trial and error is the name of the game, so far, I seem to have got it right!
Since I started this build in the autumn of last year, I have lost three fish, mainly due to poor stock from the shops. I am sorry if I seem abrupt or headstrong, but I have invested a great deal of time and money in this hobby, done as much research as possible and listened to all advice, whether I took it or not. No-one can be sure of an outcome with combinations like I have, but so far, so good.
To quote myself earlier on:
I spend hours just watching all the activity! I very rarely watch TV now, too much else going on. Feeding time takes about an hour, by the time I check that they are all feeding, find that little neon that doesn't appear to be there, only to find that I can't count, looking for that plec that is hiding behind something......
This really means: I am always watching for problems and making sure that all my friends are safe and well. What do you see when you look up from your computer? I see this!
