Unusual Setup

I was wondering when someone was going to challenge my stock levels!

Ok, from the top:
Coldwater and tropical doesnt go

The cold water fish have been living at 26C for the last 7 months and have no problem with it. The angels are in there with them and quite happy about it, as are the BABY Balas. The Danios are big enough not to be considered as food and the whole lot get on great! (Where is the book that says it can't be done?)

clown loaches need bigger groups

I bought three, and am waiting for the shop to get a replacement for the one that died in transit. They are very young and at present measure less than 2 inches. before they are big enough to worry about, the new 8' tank will be up and running. Most people would call it planning ahead.

you say those tanks are only 8" deep the gouramis

The tanks measure 36"x15"x8" and have a capacity of 19 gallons. As the dwarf gourami will only get to 4" full grown, is there a problem? The Pearls are in a corner tank which has 30 gallons. Is there a problem with that?

and bala sharks are to big for them

The balas are not in the small tanks, they are in the 40 gallon and again, they measure just 3 - 4 inches.

male and female better wont mix long term

If they don't, I'll move them! So far I have had no problems with them and they all appear to be happy. When they start to show signs of breeding, then they will be moved into their own tanks, until then, let them play!

the tetras will nip at there fins

All the advice on tetras states that tetras are mostly a problem if they are in small numbers. As yet, neither of the bettas are showing any signs of fin-nipping, and the tetras are happily ignoring them and squabbling amongst themselves.

I think that's the lot. You may have noticed that I am doing my homework here, and one of the reasons for having so many tanks is so that any problems can be dealt with quickly and effectively. Within half an hour I can move all the fish from one tank to another and re-stock with a different combination. trial and error is the name of the game, so far, I seem to have got it right!

Since I started this build in the autumn of last year, I have lost three fish, mainly due to poor stock from the shops. I am sorry if I seem abrupt or headstrong, but I have invested a great deal of time and money in this hobby, done as much research as possible and listened to all advice, whether I took it or not. No-one can be sure of an outcome with combinations like I have, but so far, so good.

To quote myself earlier on:
I spend hours just watching all the activity! I very rarely watch TV now, too much else going on. Feeding time takes about an hour, by the time I check that they are all feeding, find that little neon that doesn't appear to be there, only to find that I can't count, looking for that plec that is hiding behind something......

This really means: I am always watching for problems and making sure that all my friends are safe and well. What do you see when you look up from your computer? I see this!

If they happen to be missing in the angel tank there's a good chance an angel had a snack.

What a fantastic idea. I think I may have to have a word with the other half and get him to build me something like that set up, maybe on a slightly smaller scale as I don't think I could fit anything that fantastic in my lounge, or dining room, or any other room in my house for that matter! Looks amazing, I think I'd just get rid of my tv if I had a setup like that

Just because you worked out your tank to be 19g and 30g doesnt mean its suitable its a crappy size at only 8" deep you can not keep pearl gouramis in that. And also do you know the size your balas will get to, cause so far going in to the 8 foot of yours should be all your balas all your angels and your pearl gouramis.

I have to agree that the bettas should really be moved now instead of later.
Why wait for a problem when you can just avoid it all together by seperating them now.
Plus bettas and gouramis from everything I've read do NOT mix together well at all and will more than likely become too aggressive with eachother.
Once again.. why wait for that to happen when you can do something about it now.
Just think.. you could feed your MTS by getting the bettas their own tanks :D

Other than a few fishy problems though... your whole setup is just awesome! I would love it if we could afford something like that.
I think your tanks would look even better with more plants though! heh... Oo or maybe themes.. that would be pretty nifty.
Or uhm.. yeah.. I can't think of anything else heh. :good:

Thanks for all the input folks! As to your points Mark7616, I will take them under advisement and work out a way to separate the bettas on a more permanent basis. The Gouramis will be fine in the tank they are in though, as it's a corner tank, it is not 8" deep but 24". When I worked out the design, I took great care to ensure that the tanks could handle the type of fish I intended to get for them. With reference to the 8' tank, not everything will have to go in there. The 4' is quite capable of taking some of the larger fish long term as well.

Several of you have remarked about the cost of this setup. It cost just £250 for all 6 tanks and the stand and hood are DIY, so it wasn't as expensive as you all think! The new 8' tank is costing only £170 too. I use cheap air filtration for all tanks, domestic lighting in the canopy and standard heaters. The main cost of setting them up was the air pumps, 2 ClearSeal 4 outlet pumps @ £28.00 each, and 6 150W heaters that I got at £11.50 each.

I have also been theming the tanks since the pictures were taken.

And others still being worked on!

That's about what I have planned for the end result. There will be two balas and all the angels in the 8', with one of the sharks staying in the 4', which will be replaced later this year with a larger tank, so that it can cope with the clowns as well.

Thank you for your concern Mark, I do appreciate it and it's nice to know that people care and take the time to check that others are taking the same care of their stocks.

If I seemed to be a little annoyed before, it was that I have spent so much time setting this lot up and planning ahead, that all your comments almost mirrored my own thoughts! It was uncanny!

Nice setup, if only my room was like that, tanks all around hehehe ;)
Just not a fan of artificial stuff on the aquariums but that is personal choice more than anything.

Keep us updated and carefull on the mixing up of the fish ;)
