I noticed a couple of weeks ago that my platy had a piece missing from her tail. I noticed this morning she has a bigger chunk missing. It's not discoloured, no red marks. She's eating well but I noticed when she tries to eat bigger bits of food she spits them out again but can keep smaller bits in. She's also opening and closing her mouth the past couple of days, not gasping at the surface though.
My platys don't seem to be doing well in general the past couple of months.
Any ideas anyone?

How is your water quality? Have you seen other fish nipping at her or anything?

Is there a chunk missing from her fin or is it split and continuing to split? This most definately does sound like a water quality issue. Be sure to research the platy fish and find out wether or not the tempurature is correct. Also if you had just set up your tank research cycling your new tank. If this is an established tank be sure to research water changes and how often to do them as well as to be sure to generously vaccuum the gravel. Also only feed the amount the fish can eat in 2 minutes and make sure you do not have too many fish in your tank.

Thanks for the replies guys! My water is fine. I do 30-40% water change weekly without fail. I'm careful when feeding and I don't feed them one day a week. My tank is well established. I suspect my neon tetras. I've seen them at her a couple of times. I'm thinking of taking them to my lfs and see how things go after that.
