Our tank has been set up for 2 months now. After it was finished cycling the pH levels went as high as 7.4, but with the addition of 2 pieces of bog wood the levels stayed right around 7.1 . About a week ago I removed one of the pieces of bogwood and today when I did the weekly water change and testing the level was up to 7.4  . Could one piece of bog wood change the pH levels that much?

Our 5 gallon tank (which uses the exact same water) and doesn't have bog wood in it is always at 7.1 which makes me even more confused.

All of the testing is done with a good liquid test kit. Any ideas?

Most wood will lower ph where as adding some types of rocks will raise ph. My advice would be when ever you add anything to the tank check the levels after a day or so. Little changes in ph like yours aren't something to really worry about.

When I first added the bogwood I remember that I checked it, but I didn't think anything of it when I removed this piece
