i have a 10 gallon tank a 2 gallon tank and a 1 gallon fishbowl. i am going to buy 2 males and four females from the fish store. i want to breed a blue male with any female then i want to breed one of the female offspring with the father. and then breed a new offspring with the father to make a 75% "father colored breed" then i want to breed brothers with sisters to keep the breed going. my question is if i do this will the offspring have complications like being born dead, not being able to swim, and fused together?

Thnx :D

Inbreeding does have serious consequences. Since I'm not the guppy pro here, I'll leave the details up to someone that knows more about it. I do know that most guppies are inbred that you find in pet-stores, and they usually have serious health problems. Also, you will need a larger tank to house the fry in and one for your 'parent' guppies. At least 20 gallons, since the rule of thumb is 1" of fish per gallon, and some guppies can reach 3".

Yes, you'll notice all those things you mentioned from inbreeding, plus their hardiness and immune system will continue to go downhill. Guppies are very inbred anyway, so any extra just makes them weaker.

Your idea works in theroy, but breeding doesn't always work that way. Genetics can be tricky, especially with the dominant and recessive traits. Have you read any about line-breeding? I've seen some great books out there that have described it better then I ever could. :p

i dont know much about line breeding. ive been on google but that didnt help much all i kno is inbreeding looked the easiest out of cross and out breeding.

I suppose it's easier to get the trait, but it also poses risks.

I'd look into a good book. I have a few myself that describe it well, and I'll get the names for you. If your LFS has books, just browse through them for a while...that's how I got mine. :)

since guppy genetics in particular (mostly cuz they've been so manipulated to get gorgeous colors) are at best unpredictable, maybe u should buy new guppies that match the traits you want. this way, maybe you can avoid some of the negative consequences of inbreeding and still develop your line. hope this helps :D
