a while a go i saw a cool cichlid at my local petstore. can anyone helpme identify its speicies as it was in a tank of small assorted cichlids.....it was a purpleish blue with black stripes....if i remeber correctly it was an african cichlid

Could also be Pseudotropheus Elongatus, which are far more common in LFS and have a purpleish tinge. Demasoni are bright blue and black. Could be a Saulosi male or an Afra aswell.

Many Mbuna have this colour scheme or similar. Your best bet is to ask at the LFS (hopefully your LFS will know) for an accurate id (hopefully your LFS will know) or google the species mentioned here

it looks similar to the PS Demasoni and the Ps e.... except no other colors r present and the stripes r thin and only go from the dorsal fin to a little below the eyes and and the stripes r only around the midsection

i just remebered something that could help...the petstore where i saw this in feeds that tank of cichilds lettuce and the aprox full adult size is 6" but again the tank is full of assorted african cichilids so.... but ill ask them if they know the speieces of it next time im in there

Whatever it is (could be many) it's an aggressive mbuna. If the fish is young I'd be inclined to say it's Lombardoi, since they're the color you're talking about and all to commonly found. These guys are ruthless.

thanks....how agressive can these guys get if ur thinkin of the same fish....the ones at my lfs seemed to get along with each other just fine but then they r only juviniles

Both demasoni and lombardoi are considered agresive,
Maylandia Lombardoi are usually called kennyi if that rings a bell
However in my experience the lombardoi is the boss of the tank but not responsible for any deaths besides one female which was entirely my fault (2male:2female ratio, and the dead fish had breed three consecutive times with less then a week in between)

If you give em space they shouldn't be a problem. The lombardoi is my favorite fish it seems to be so much sarter then the other mbuna and very personal, right now he's going crazy up and down the glass constantly cause he killed that female and I removed the other one till I could get more he's just bored

Demasoni are extremely agresive to similar looking fish, especially their own species keep extra females with them
