I'm a little in shock. I woke up this morning to find my beautiful female betta dead and half eaten by her tank mates. I just can't figure out why she died, until I know why it happened, I don't want to replace her. The past three days she's been a little pale and slow, and wasn't eating much. I figured she was just adapting to the 90 degree weather we've been having, and wasn't concerned. She's shown no signs of sickness whatsoever, besides the very slight paleness (I was the only one who noticed it, but she sits on my desk, so I "knew" her pretty well) and the lethargy.
I can very clearly see how many eggs were in her, and I think she might have become eggbound. I don't know how common this is, or if it can cause death. She was only about 6 months old - she was still a baby when I got her 3 and a half months ago.
Tank parameters are normal. I have three snails, three black kuhli loaches and a bunch of ghost shrimp - all are fine and showing no symptoms - behavioural or otherwise. (Other than the feeding frenzy.
) I added a new snail two weeks ago, and some more ghost shrimp - I assume the could have been carrying something, but then why aren't the loaches showing symptoms?
If anyone has any ideas, please throw them this way! I'd really like to get another betta, but I don't want to risk infecting them with something unknown. If it's really an unknown I'm dealing with, how long should I wait for it to hopefully dissapear before replacing her?
Thank you!
