Now that I have more experience and I have some cash and an idea in my head I want to re-design my tank.

My questions...now is the time to get an under gravel heater...so I will get one. Does this replace the normal heater? or is it run alongside the normal heater?

For people who re-did tanks, did you take the fish out? I only have a small tank (maybe 7 ish gallons) that I could temporarily set up for a few hours.

Also I've been trying to find the link that gf255 posted for info on tubes. I have a 55Watt interpet t5 tube. I'm going to change the bulb, but wanted to know how many Kelvins the Daylight bulb had. I'm not having any luck with google either.

Ok the interpet 55w daylight tube is 6500k

undergravel heater does not replace your normal heater, runs alongside it

i take the fish out for a couple of hours as it usually gets a bit messy

im sure gf will have more info for you :)

i'm not disagreeing as i have not used them but i thought UG Heaters replaced the internal one??

Edit: yes remove the fish. the 1 hour job will end up taking 5 hours if your anything like me. you'll stirr up the whole tank in the process and make a hell of a mess.

better off to move them before destroying their world..
