well..someone is going to give me a disus (if it survives)....because they are moving house and do not want it anymore it was in a pair but the other discus died the other day.......i wanted to keep discus as you may have read in the oddball section and this would be a good way to get started.....BUT...atm my 60G hasnt even got anything in it and im am getting the discus this weekend if it is still alive..if i do not collect it it will probably end up dead anyways(am i doing a good deed, im bascially trying to save it).... what shall i do start up my 60 now quickly with a cycled filter and worrie about setting it up properly later.....or can it go in my 35 as a tempory home.....any info or suggestions would be very appreciated right now as i am stuck on what to do??? -_-

go with the cycled 60g, make sure it has a heater

forgott to mention...im housing a golden barb in my 5G (tempory rescue) can i put that in there and with it.......ie put the filter and heater from the 5G into the 60 and leave it running till the weekend and this will be ok for the discus...??? im not planning to fill the 60G rite up because it is such a tempory situation until i get everything sorted.... i also have a spare heater so 2 heaters can go in the 60G for heating.

put the 5 g filter in with the 60g filter for the weekend so the bacteria colonizes and cycles, then put the discus in :)

sorry i think i have explained that wrong....in my first post i said the 60G is totally empty nothing in it at all....the filter i have which is cycled is in my 5G atm....its the filter i was going to use tempory until i can get another one...hence that fact i would not be filling the 60 right up....this is why i am slighty stuck... ...i know discus need clean water and am willing to do daily water changes until this gets sorted out

my 35 houses cichlids already and they are very peaceful species compared to some...my cichlids all get on and there is no agression between them as they are only small....

I don't understand how filter media with enough bacteria to convert the waste from one barb will be much help in the immediate term with the waste of one barb + one discus. I could be missing something, though?

Can you take the filter media (or as much of it as possible) from the filter of the tank the discus is in at the moment? I think the immediate panic should be to make sure the tank is cycled as far as possible.
In terms of tank-mates, the best option is to have as few as possible until you're confident the tank is cycled, also make sure that they are calming rather than mad flighty ones, and can cope with higher temparatures.
obviously longer term there are more considerations, but immediate future, that's what I would aim for.

huh...i dont think you understand what i am saying....there is a filter in my 5G which is cycled so it had bacteria to convert waste therefore it converts all waste it meets....soooo when i get the discus the waste from him will also be converted leaving clean water which will not go through a cycle...as discus are sensitive fish they would not be able to take water which is cycling... the filter nedia has not been cycled with 1 barb..it was in my 35G and i bought a new filter took the media out of the 35G and replaced the 35G with new media so i have all the bacteria from my 35G which currently in my 5G but obviosuly a discus cannot be housed in my 5G....

weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllll??????????????????

SOMEONE HELP...EARLY ARRIVAL STILL DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO......CANT I JUST PUT HIM IN THE 35 HE'S ABOUT 3 INCHES....HE'S SITTING IN A POLYSTRYRENE INSULATED BOX ATM!!!!!!

Fill the 60g with water and use a kettle/pots and pans of boiling water to get the water up to temperature. Then take half of the media from each cycled filter you have a put it into the filter for the 60g tank along with the uncycled media, replace all the mdia you took from the cycled filters with new. Put the discus into the 60g and dont feed any of the fish for at least 2 days while the bacteria in the cycled media multiply and colonise the new media.

fill your tank, why dont you seed your new filter by pinching some filter medium out of your old filter and place it in the new, better than nothing.

fill your 60g tank with water (minralised RO prefrably) get to temp about 28'C/29'C match the PH of yout friends tank to minamulise the stress.

then acliatise the fish in the normal way.

keep up the water changes while the filters are astadlised.

so i take it the 35 is a no no altogheter then?atm i only have a spare fluval one+...the fluval 4+ is coming this evening!!!!

Can you divide the 35g so that the other fish are on one side and the discus is on the other as a temporry option? The trouble is that is it very likely that your other fish will stress out the already stressed discus which is likely to kill it, discus just dont do well when kept with active boistrous tankmates.

discus need roughly 45/67.5ltrs per fish depending on the articals you read.

a 35ltr tank is prone to swings in water chemistry water, which will kill the discus as they are PH sensative and will not tolerate rises in ammonia/nitrite/ and high levels of nitrate/phosphate, the flucuations in temp aint good either.
