Hi everyone,

So, just got some Julii Cory Cats for my 20 gallon setup, which currently has two dwarf cichlids and croaking gouramis.
They seem to be adapting just fine. They're actively swimming and investigating the tank, and their tank mates seem to be happy to have them here.
However, when my Julii cats swim to the top of the tank, (I'm assuming to search for food because they watched my gouramis swim to the top and grab their meal) they go BALLISTIC. I mean, picture the fish flopping and shooting itself back and forth through the tank like it has just realized its been caught on a fisherman's line!!!! What the heck is going on!? I have read up on them but haven't heard of anything like this. From what I have learned, they are supposed to be very peaceful (but skiddish) catfish.

Can anyone help shed some light on this?

Mine did the same thing and then died

One of mine did that too just minutes before it died :(

Hmm new one on me!

How long did you have the cories before they died, whats you tank temp?

Cichlids & corys aren't necessarily a good mix, cichlids can become aggressive to cories to the extent of corys losing their eyes...

I tested my water straight after & had no ammonia or nitrites & 15 nitrates.
All the other corys were fine & still are

My water parameters are quite good -
0ppm NH4
5ppm NO3
0ppm NO2
pH 6.3
Temp = 82F

Although I can't give you an accurate reading on the oxygen, I've never really been too concerned. Especially since I have a filter for a 30gallon tank, the water displacement is so strong from the intake flow that I can always see a large amount of oxygen being maneuvered through the tank. Of course, I could still be totally wrong about whether or not that is helping them.

Both of my cichlids are dwarf cichlids and I've read that they can be together. It seemed like they left them alone just fine. I did acclimate the bag for 1 hour so they'd adjust to the temperature properly.

The one that died started acting strangely when the lights came on. I monitored him for a while and he didn't seem to be "suffering" (he went right back to swimming and food hunting after his little episode) so I went to bed. When I woke up in the morning, he was upside down, not moving, dead at the bottom of the tank. ;(

I'm still searching for the other one. I don't know if he died yet but last night I was too scared to turn the light on in case that was the cause for all of this drama. I haven't found any bodies yet, but I should know if the Cory made it tonight....sigh. I have always wanted this type of Cory, and it died....on my birthday!!!

I think you will find your possible cause of your cories demise is the temperature, 82 degrees is far to hot for average cories, ideally should be 22- 25 degrees tops dependant on which species, the only cory suitable really is the sterbai cory for 29-30 degrees,

The corys probably stressed out and were trying to get oxygen at the top, hence the flopping around...

I bet you're right. My other Cory is still alive, which makes me very happy. I turned the heater in my thank down and the other one seems to be doing well :)

However - I just can't manage to get her to find food!!! I got her nice hikari wafers to nibble on at the bottom, and I swear, no matter where I put them, she goes to the OPPOSITE direction. Let night I put down three wafers in the tank, and she was RIGHT next to one of them. She searched all over the tank and missed every wafer. I'm scared she's not eating :( any advice?

Corys tend to hunt at night, so its probably finding titbits around the tank when its lights out, Try different foods, mine only have wafers a couple of times a week, their main food in sinking granules,(tetra prima & nutrafin max) plus usual bloodworm,bbs.etc...

Try feeding it at night :good:

My main tank, they willing eat when the lights go on, but my metae's are totally different and shy will only eat once the lights go off..spent many a night in the dark watching them charge around and hunting out food

Whats your temperature now?
