Uh oh...Hurricane Frances

Hi BParksJ28 :)

I can understand how you must feel under the circumstances. Sometimes those hurricanes move up the coast and hit New York too. I live on Long Island and remember some bad ones!

It's probably unlikely that the worst will happen, and if it does you will be more than happy just to know that you and your family are safe. It's more likely that you might have a power outage though, and this is something you can prepare for and deal with.

Here's a link with some good information for you to think about:

http://cichlid-forum.com/articles/power_failure.php

I kept all my tanks going from Thursday through Monday when that big power failure hit the east coast last year, with nothing more than water changes and manual aeration. In fact, some of my corys spawned in the middle of all that.

I'll be thinking about you when the storm hits. Good luck and please let us know all about it. :D

I really dont understand why in the US most houses are built from timber especially in bad weather hot spots when a concrete house would be so much better, Why is that?

Good luck to you when the storm hits and i hope your fishies will be ok.

Ditto. I really think a lot of heartache would be reduced if concrete houses were built instead.

I do hope that you and your family remains safe and sound. Hopefully the fishies will be alright too.

Most newer homes here are indeed built of concrete block, easier to cool with AC and stand up better to storms. However, apartment buildings are often built of wood, i guess it's cheaper. ~shrug~ Old Florida bungalow "breeze catcher" style houses built before AC was available or common were also built of wood, and surpisingly, stand up to weaker hurricanes quite well. I'm not sure if it's feasible to construct homes that can withstand the major CAT4 and 5 'canes though.

Why do you think that? surely it would be better to build safer stronger homes even at a little extra cost.

All appartment blocks in Ireland are built from concrete and always have been, I wouldn't like to live on the top floor on an appartment block made from timber in case of fire.

Nidge, you have to remember in the uk we do not see these kinds of winds, but in the last 15 years we've had many strong storms (100 mph+) that have ripped roofs of supposedly solidly built houses. I used to work in insurance and I saw the damage caused here .

The increse in constant wind speed to 150mph+ with gusts well in excess of that will do considerably more damage, not just 50% it will compound, so if they hit here they'd make a big mess also, however wooden houses does strike me as an oversight in these area's.

To BParksj28,

As I see it you have 2 choices:

As others have said, leave the fish there, protect the tank by wrapping it up etc to insulate and protect against debris, get a battery powered pump and filter. or a generator that could provide power as it's almost certain that there will be power loss if it hits the area. Clean the tank before you leave and do a water change and do not feed. And finaly hope and pray that it goes right by you.

Other choice is pack the fish up in bags and take them with you, get a large plastic drum/bin to keep them in, pack some gravel and ornaments in with some water and take your filter with you if you can, set the tub up with the gravel, ornaments and water add your filter and fish and a tempory home that could last for a few days.

I think from the fishes point of view there's risks either way, you leave them behind and it hits and even a power loss could wipe out your tank, you take them with you and the stress could cause losses also.

I've had a great time when visiting your area 2 years ago (excepting the sunburn ) and I hope and pray that it misses you entirely and what ever happens, 1st and foremost you and your family are safe.

Good luck

Arfie

ok guys this is my last post we are evacuatting early to avoid traffic....im going to turn off the filters and power and just hope for the best....im going to put a weekend feeder thing in each and hope its good enough... i have covered the windows and we will just see what happens

hopefully ill come back and they will be here....but im not going to worry about that over my own safety...like it was said they are just fish...

so wish me luck everyone ill update ASAP

adios

I advise you to not put in the weekend feeder, it could cause water quality problems.
Why do you think that? surely it would be better to build safer stronger homes even at a little extra cost.
Do you have any idea what it would take to withstand the winds of a CAT5 storm? It's not that i think it's economically infeasible, it's practically infeasible.

I hope that Nothing Bad Happens to your Fish.

You have done what you can and the rest is up to The Weather.

But I hope it Misses your Area.

uh ohhhh
hear i come! I promise i wont hurt ur fishies!
heheee
im on my wayyy
my name is hurricane frances
lol
sorry

well the hurrican turned at the last minute and we didnt get a direct hit...but we did get it really bad.

also...the storm lost a lot of its power before coming on shore..

we never got hurricane winds which was awesome! but we did get 60 mph sustained winds for 12 hours at least.

there was a ton of damage to houses in the area and buisnesses though...our appartment complex was fine.

it has been raining and storming here for close to 36 hours....this is crazy....the hurricane has just about gone and now we r getting tornadoes..lol

we have received 12 inches of rain...there is flooding everywhere

this sucks...o well

next weekend its hurricane Ivan...haha wish us all luck with that one

Phew... glad to hear you and your fishies made it through.

It must be quite a sight to be there in that hurricane. The worst storm I remember in the UK was back in 1987 when a very large depression came right over us and caused millions of pounds of damage. It wasn't even classed as a hurricane though.

The damage would have been far worse if our buildings weren't so solid though. My next door neighbour had his chimney blown off, but apart from that the other houses were fine. Much of the damage was caused by falling trees and power lines coming down.

Glad you're all safe and well, brace yourselves for Ivan and good luck again.
