I don't know what went wrong.
The platy fry we had in our 5 gallon tank all died today.
For some reason, the ammonia lvls in the tank were shooting up, but through multiple water changes, I finally got it back down to 0 and actually stay at 0.
I know the fry probably just finally succumbed to the damage the ammonia did, but it's driving me crazy trying to figure out WHY all of a sudden there was ammonia.
I did medicate the tank w/ maracyn 1 & 2 a week before but that shouldn't have wiped out the bacteria. I've used it in my 10gal w/ no ill effects and I'm using it in our new 10gal with no problem.

It's just upsetting b/c it feels like I could've prevented this from happening. It's such an aweful feeling... raising them up and then watching them die like this...

Awww.. It completely stinks when you lose a life..especially when their babies! Its ok to be sad and vent about it but know that you did your best to prevent it from happening. I'm sure next time it will all work out!

Well unfortunatly there's not going to be a next time.
Sounds like we're giving up, but we weren't planning on breeding in the first place.
We bought 2 females and a few males, but were going to keep them seperate so we wouldn't be flooded w/ fry.
So yeah, that's what we did, and since the females and males were all in the same tanks together at the LPS, of course the females were already pregnant when we got them.
We were going to keep a few of the fry and then give the rest to the LFS.

Thankfully there are still 6 fry that are alive that I put into the new 10gal tank when we got it. They're all looking very healthy so unless something unexpected happens to that tank as well, we'll still have a couple we can keep while giving the rest away.

Sigh..... I still feel so bad for the other ones though. They were always so lively and always doing that wiggle whenever I got near the tank wanting food. I'm really going to miss seeing that :(

..................yes there is a filter (it's a built in biowheel in the hood), airstone, heater blahblahblah in the tank.
The tank is cycled, but as I already said.. for some reason ammonia just shot up.
It wasn't the tap b/c our other tanks are fine, we don't spray anything near the tank... I'm the only one that feeds the fish.....

I do remember that I used Jungle Fungus cure or whatever it's called in the tank. Not sure if that kills off the beneficial bacteria.
I've used it in my 10gallon w/ no problem, but I can't remember if I had to add more mature filter media after I was done medicating.

wth are you talking about? Are you just trying to be cute referencing something that I'm not familiar with or just being a troll?

I'm sorry for sounding angry, but when you post something like that... it's not very clear what your intent was... whether it be just trying to cheer me up, or trying to be a butthead :p

Hi Amunet, I'm sorry to hear of your losses. I always feel the same way. Just a few questions if I may. Was the filter on the 5 gallon tank running long enough, before the fry were added, to cycle? And the other was why the different medications? Were you having trouble diagnosing some problem, were there sick fish in the 5 gallon quarantine tank before the fry were added?
