UGF's and Powerheads

I have a UGF in my 55 gal tank and two Penguin 1140 powerheads. One of my powerheads died. Each one is circulates 300 gals per hour. Do I need to replace the dead one or do you think the one will be sufficient for the UGF to work properly?? Ive always had two so Im not really sure.

Did you have one at each end of the tank?

If so, if you don't replace it, there could be some bacteria die-off in the end without the powerhead leading to a crash and deaths. I'd say replace it ASAP.

You really do need two powerheads, otherwise half the tank will be underfiltered. Of course UGFs are pretty much less than useless though unless you clean under the trays on a fairly frequent basis.

I was told not to distrub the trays because it would kill the bacteria - is this not true??

ok, I only have three plecos in there right now and someone is coming to get them on Wed.

This tank has been set up for about 6 years and the UGF has NEVER been disturbed. Should I pull it up, clean and recycle since I will be fish free for a bit??

If you're going to be fish free, take the opportunity to get rid of the UGF and upgrade to a good HOB filter. Give your gravel a thorough cleaning, as I'm sure it's really really gross now.
