hi, i am near the end of my custom tank project and i only just came across the discovery that there is not enough clearance at the top to get a big enough filter in.

my question is, would a under gravel filter work in it ok? the base of the tank is 53.5" x 11" so i dunno if that is a decent enough size?

also, are UGF's easy to maintain and how would i clean the gravel?

thanks

Yes you could have UGFs in there. You would need two, with the up pipes and power heads at each end.

But UGFs are a pain to maintain and generally rather crappy to be honest.

A much better idea would be a nice external cannister filter like a Fluvel 404 or one of the Einheim range.

Yes, a canister would be the best. UGF's require breakdown every so often and it can get messy. The maintenance on a canister would be easier and you could customize the media choices to fit your particular situation. The bacterial/mechanical/chemical filtration would be vastly superior. You can still do a UGF and it would work though.

yeah i was gonna get a fluval 404 but its about 15" high and thats a good 3 inches to tall

i'm looking at about 9"-10" clearance at the top.

could you get 2 smaller canister filters instead?

UGF are not worth the hassle IMO. From what I heard, they are more trouble to maintain than anything.

I always think that getting two smaller filters to equal the bigger filter, or even have more power than the big one is a good idea because then if one has a technical failure, you would still have decent filtration untill u can replace/fix the other one

The 404 is a really tall filter anyway. I have an eheim Ecco 2235 on my 26g tank and thank is rated for tanks up to 80g and is much more compact than the 404. use one or 2 of these and you'll have plenty of room!!
