Ugf Help!

I have a 20 gal tank with an UGF unit. It is on 3 grids, each with two tubes, the 3rd has no grid. I run an airstone for air and I have my top fin 10 gallon filters hooked into the UGF tubing. I decided to go with a planted tank and take out the UGF completely... however, I like what it does. Could I keep one grid and tube attached to one filter on one side of the tank (or middle?), and just plant the tanks on the other side of the tank?
