I bought a female Uaru today. She is about 5" and has some nasty nips on her fins thanks to her tank mates. I know very little about these fish and would really appreciate any information contributed by aquarists who have kept them. Thanks.

Hi sev :)

Uarus are kind of like Discus, bigger, hardier discus. They aren't aggressive at all, and actually like to be with other Uarus or fish that look like them.
Uarus are very herbivorus, and need plant material in their diet to stay healthy. You should have no problem feeding your Uaru, as they are notpicky once they have settled into their environment :)

The tank should be 55g minimum (Uarus get to twelve inches!), and care should be the same as for a severum

Check out the Uaru forum  The members there are very helpful and friendly :)

Like what kind of plant material should I feed them? Can I include any meat matter in their diet such as beef heart?

Lettuce
Peas
Corn
Broccoli
Krill
Frozen shrimp
Cichlid sticks
Mealworms
crickets
grubs
All food that I feed my Uaru, try to keep the amount of meaty foods and the veggies your Uaru gets balanced

I've never fed mine beefheart, and he is very healthy and looks awesome  Uarus aren't too picky, so regular foods should be good :)

I'll second the lettuce suggestion. They absolutely love it!
Is it any kind of special lettuce? How should I prepare it? Will my sevs, angels, and firemouths eat it as well? I've never fed my fish anything besides brine shrimp and dry foods so I need a little help. :S
