Hey again ive just been Brain storming and came across these guys on the internet if anyones had any experience with them please tell me and what fish can be kept with them what water parameters and what size tanks?

Thanks

Uaru amphiacanthoides
treat them like discus and angelfish. soft neutral to slightly acid water unless they are local bred and use to hard alkaline water. Feed them on lots of variety and keep them warm 26-32C. They are much tougher than discus as far as diseases go but should be kept in clean water. They grow to a good size (10-12inches) and you need at least a 4x2x2ft tank for a few of them. The babies feed off the adults mucous coating just like discus do.

I got about that much from the internet and a book I bought but any personal experiences, favorite foods, or good tankmates?
Thanks for the input

they eat just about anything. Try not to give them too much frozen bloodworms but stuff like prawn, fish, daphnia, etc is fine. Feed them a flake or pellet food first and then offer some frozen food. This stops them becoming addicted to the frozen stuff and means they won't go on hunger strikes if you run out of frozen food.

festivums, severums, angels, discus, apistogrammas, catfish of all sorts, some of the bigger more peaceful tetras will all get along fine with them. They aren't agressive and as long as the other fish can handle the temperature (if you keep them above 28C) they are normally fine with most peaceful fish.

do regular water changes and try to limit temperature fluctuations during the water change. Keep the gravel clean and the water well filtered. They can eat a lot and make a mess if there isn't enough filtration.

Alright cool thanks, now I just gotta find some

ya, I haven't seen these in my lfs since i started fishing keeping almost two yrs ago. Discus have become so popular and are smaller so I assume the lfs figures they an make more profit off the discus, so no need to stock Uaru's

Ox :good:

Yah, I would go discus, but at the pet stores Ive been too they are like $120.00 and those arnt even the pretty ones, I just thought the Uaru was so exotic and what not, but now I know to keep my eye open. Are all discus around $100?

Depends where you get them from.. and what size.

In the UK you'd expect to pay £20 for 3", good quality Discus. Much more for adults.

Saying that though you can go to some lesser known aquatics stores and pick up 4" Discus for £8. You might not be able to get 6 of the highest quality but you'll nearly always get one or two little stunners.

Uaru are absolutely amazing. I don't see them very often, which is probably a good thing as I'd end up buying another tank for them

aquatic lawnmowers :hyper:

lovely fish, but like to be in groups i've seen single fish literally pine to death

well worth keeping, but you'll need a big tank for a big group
