I read the sticky about adding salt for Mollies. I always have but I use Top Fin brand Conditioning Salt. Is this ok or do I need actual Marine Salt? :good:

Anyone? C'mon, someone has to have an oppinion. I knwo the question of salt has been asked before but I'm wondering what the difference is in the marine vs conditioning salt.

You can use either. You can use regualr Aquarium Salt if you are keeping it in a community set-up. You can also set-up a marine fish tank and slowy aclimatize it to marine level's. You dont need Salt, but i alway'shave better result's with it.

I have guppies, platies, and mollies. I always add API aquarium salt. All of my fish do just fine with it. It says it supposed to improve gill function and promote disease recovery. I also saw a big improvement in my pH levels. I'm still pretty new though so I just wanted to share my experience. I'm not expert by a long shot! Hope your experience is as positive as mine.

I've just answered your other post about plants similarly, but after seeing the responses here I feel the need to copy and paste it :).

So here:

In regards to adding salt for mollies, see this pinned topic: http://www.fishforums.net/content/Common-L...lies-Need-Salt/

And here's a really good thread about adding salt to a freshwater aquarium in general, everyone who uses aquarium salt should read through it, some important information in there: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=196353&hl=

IMO, adding salt in the way your currently doing is only helping your wallet to get lighter ;).

One tablespoon per 5 gallons will do nothing to benefit the your mollies, especially considering it's not marine salt.
All it's doing it potentially harming your other fish over time, and making your wallet lighter.

IMO the manufacturers of these different 'freshwater aquarium' salts say to add such a low amount because it will not noticeably harm the fish enough for the average consumer to realise that the long term source of any problems they encounter was the salt.

mollies are brackish, but all freshwater fish... are not brackish, which means, they dont need salt, and if they do, it can be life threatening (might take a while if at low levels). Its not the salt mollies want, its the hard water conditions, which MARINE salt provides, like what was said earlier, pure NACL is doing nothing but making your wallet lighter, and maybe even putting some lives at risk.

My water is pretty hard to begin with My tests read a GH of at least 150.
Thanks everyone for all the info. I'll make sure they're all healthy and happy!
