My oldest fish (two yrs. old) is growing a lump. He still eats and acts normal. But he is losing weight. It could be a tumor, internal parasites, or possibly another disease.

The lump is growing about an inch before the body ends and the fins start.

If its a tumour then i dont think there is anything you can do other than make him comfortable.

Where is the lump? Is there a chance you could get a picture of your fish? Two years for a betta is getting up there, but some bettas have been known to live for longer ;)

What and how much are you feeding him? It's kinda hard to tell with out more of a discription of your fish....

I lost my regular camera. My new cameraphone picture quality isn't enough to tell.

He used to be on a bloodworms-only diet (he's my picky one who wouldn't eat anything but bloodworms/larvae), but I finally was able to get him to take the Bio-Gold pellets.

I would put the weight loss down to the tumour and old age.

Unless you bred the Betta yourself there is no way to really tell the fish age. Some are 6months to a year old when you buy from a shop so if you have had him 2 years then 3 is a good age for the thinbred fancy tails.

I'm assuming the weight loss to be a result of the change of diet. I put him back on fatty blodwoorms and he's already grown the weight back. The lump may just be a result of old age - what do you think?

I have Maracyn and Maracyn-Two. Is it a good idea to treat with them just in case it is internal parasites? (When I use those medications on any of my fish, I use them together with no exceptions)

Maracyn one and two won't cure internal parasites, only the bacteria infections that they can cause.
If he put his weight back on he dosnt have internal parasites.
But you could use the maracyn on the lump to see if that does anything.

Hope he is ok. I was thinking earlier, all my boys have never grown so god knows how old they were when I got them from the lfs. :grr:

I'll try Maracyn and Maracyn-Two. I have 3 days worth of a supply, so if I see an inprovement in 3 days, I'll run to PetSmart and get another package for the remaining 2 days. While I'm there I might as well get one of every medication (with 8 fish, there always seems to be a problem)
