hello everyone,

was just having a look at my fish just now and noticed one of my tetras has got popeye and my rainbow guppy has developed severe finrot i changed a 1/4 of the water on tuesday as i always do and the water seems to look a bit funny now. its difficult to describe.....its got a greyish tinge to it almost like its heavily aerated.

i bought a test kit tested the water just now and its not looking good....ammonia 2-4 ppm, nitrite 0.25ppm and nitrate 10ppm.

i have been struggling to get rid of a black/blue algae for some time now but its never really affected the fish before and i wonder if it is now.

is popeye contagious?? am i going to have to put the fish down just in case?? he doesnt seem to be struggling at all but all of the fish seem to be a bit agitated and im worried they are going to die one by one now , the guppy with finrot seems to be very poorly.

any help would be much appreciated.....i can take piccys and post them if req

I'd do a 40% water change straightaway, then lots of smaller ones, one every day until the water stats are under control. Both popeye and finrot are often related to water problems and since you know there is a problem there, it makes sense to deal with that first. This may be enough to sort the problem, if not you will want to get some medication in. What's the tank size and stocking? How long has the tank been running?

ive just done a 50% water change and plan to do another tomorrow....maybe less water this time tho

its a 100 litre tank i think, with 7 tetras of varying types and four guppys of varying types. the tank has been running for 8+ months now.

what kind of medication do you think??

Tank is saying not cycled so i would do some water changes, smaller one's rather than big one's or the cycle will take for ever, popeye is closely related to dropsy because of the fluid build up, you will need a bacerial med, plus the bacterial med should take care of the finrot as well, good luck.

Exophthalmia (a.k.a. Pop-Eye)

Symptoms:

Fish with exophthalmia will have eyes that are abnormally enlarged and protrude from their sockets. In severe cases the eyes may actually burst from the socket, leaving the fish eyeless. Eye swelling is caused by a build up of fluids in or behind the eye.

Cause:

There can be any number of causes for this condition. Possible causes include poor water quality, bacterial infections, viral infections, eye flukes or other parasitic infestations, or piscine tuberculosis. Even though the fish may recover, the protruding eye may remain that way. This should not adversely affect that fish.

Treatment:

Since there are so many possible causes a broad-spectrum antibiotic is recommended, such as Tetracycline, but this treatment cannot obviously guarantee success. Be sure to keep water quality in good condition.
