Well guys, I posted this in the betta forum but nobody has replied. I'll post it here to see if anybody else can help.

Around six months ago, I was in walmart and I saw this poor little black betta, a little bit of blue streaking through his tail and some red on his underbody in disgusting water, floating on his side. I thought he was dead until I picked up one nearby and he swam away.

Naturally, I got him to try to help the poor boy. I gave him nice clean water and fed him flakes until he could swim, almost a day later he was better.

Ever since then, if I feed him more than his usual four pellets (one might slip out accidently) or when I give him a water change, he'll start floating on his side again and struggling to stay upwards. He's probably had it four or five times since I got him.

Is this something that's just going to keep coming back because of how I got him or is there some way I could make it less likely for him to have these...issues?

On another note, some of you might remember Aladdin, the beautiful crowntail I got from walmart without a tail. (Just so those of you who remember us know, it's fully grown in and he's quite happy.) He's got some weight on him and he's looking like my other one did before he pineconed and died a few weeks later.

I've only been feeding him once every other day and only a few pellets. Is there anything else I can do? I hate to pick favorites, but I must say he's one of my favorites, just because of the struggle I went through to keep him alive when I first got him.

Any ideas? I'll do whatever I can to help this boy.

First Fish Problems....Does he seem bloated at all?
How often a day/ week do you feed him?

Try feeding a de-shelled pea, mushed up, this should help sort out his stomach. Does he still have the red underneath his stomach or has that gone away? Is it just his coloring?

Second Fish Problems...
Does this fish seem bloated?
How often do you change his water?
What are his tank conditions like? size?

Not at all. Other than floating sideways he looks perfectly healthy

Six days a week, four pellets in the morning.

Sorry I should have been more specific. It is part of his coloring and it's more on his bottom fin than on his stomach

I've heard about doing this quite often actually. I've always been afraid of doing it wrong and killing them. How can I be sure to get it right?

Yes, he's bloated.

How often do you change his water?
Once a week. Full tank change.

What are his tank conditions like? size?
I just changed the tank...two days ago? It holds close to two gallons, I don't know the exact size though.

Okay. Feeding Peas

Take a pea (if frozen, put in hot water to cook a bit, then cool it off in cold water, and pop the pea out of the shell.)
if it's out of a can or already warm, just pop the pea out of the shell.

Now after you pop the pea out of the shell, mush it up so it's easier for the fish to eat.

And that's all it takes to feed a pea.

I would feed both fish the pea, it can never hurt only help!!

Also I have seen just the other day what you are describing with your first fish, however I too wondered what would cause him to do this. It has to be some internal situation, not sure if you can fix it really. As long as he gets up and swims around, this is still good.

Neither one of them seem to be lethargic at all, they act like their normal selves.

I'll get peas as soon as I can =)
