Quick history of my set-up.
I started with a 54L litre tank a year ago. In htis i kept two bristlenose plecos, six x-ray tetras and five cardinals. All has been ok running with an undergravel filter. four coral platies and four black mollies where added just before i changed tanks. I had an outbreak of white spot (about three months ago) which i treated.
thistank was only temporary as I blagged a larger tank from a freind. I transferred all the substarte and undergravel filter over to the new tank and ran a canister filter along side this to mature it (a fluval 204).
The new tank is 88L. it is planted with some dwarf amozon, acorus gramineus and i believe red diamond.
All had been fine apart from one of the mollies being agressive to two of the other mollies (I now know I have three males and one female). The female then became pregnant.
On sunday i noticed that the whitespot had resurfaced. I gave the first treatment on sunday night. The molly in the mean time gave birth to over thirty fry on Wednesday night/Thursday morning. I netted them all and have put them in breeding trap.
I purchased liquifry for the fry. I also asked advice about the whitespot treatment and the fry. My local LSF said this would be fine. I also asked about the agrresive Molly with regards to the whitespot. The LSF said that the bullying could stress the fisha nd i could try using Aqualibrium salt to ease any stress. I fed the liquifry thursday as per instructions but didn't add the salt. Thursday night is when my first problem arose.
I was showing my two girls the babies when we found a dead cardinal. There didn't seem anything wrong with it or any of the other fish so although gutted I put it down to natural causes. I added the salt Thursday evening.
woke up this moring and the tank was exteremelt cloudy. the liquifry said it would make the tank cloudy but how cloudy?
All the fish were at the surface gasping for air. I did a partial water chnage (20%). to try and help (i have a wife exteremely ill with moring/noon/night sickness so I'm looking after the kids so was pushed for time before taking thme to school).
Then noticed another cardinal dead. Again no outward signs of a problem.
Once i ahd dropped the kids of did an amonia/nitrate check.
Amonia- 0
Nitirite- 0.5mg/l
Tank temp was 81degrees c to help with whitespot treament. Now 79 degrees.
So I know what killed the fish. I did another 20% water change. I also put the carbon back in my filter to see if this would clear up the water.
What I need to know is why has the nitrite level rocketed?
Sorry fo being so long winded didn't want to miss anything out that might be important.
Tanks for any help.
