Turns Out That Glofish Pics Arent Doctored

sounds cool,
so i take it you bought some?

are they dyed or is their colour natural?
Neither!

Glofish are zebra danios that have been genetically modified to include a gene from a jellyfish that produces a glowing pigment in the skin.
All very clever and facinating, but totally unnecessary.

Wow, can't wait to see pics Opcn! :hyper:

Personally, I wouldn't buy them myself as I don't believe in genetically tinkering with nature (just my opinion) but they sound interesting.

To be honest i don't think they are that attractive even though many people think they are more actractive than bog standard zebra danios- too much of a novelty fish for me, i'd rather stick with "real" fish ;) .

Yeah i'd also agree there isn't realy anything cruel about it, as cruel as long finned danios, but with so many millions of fish to just to chose from to put in your tank i think glofish are just, well... unesarsary.

Are they supposed to be glowing?... Just looks like Zebra danios taken with low level flash to me lol... I have heard of the GM Danios and its ridiculous and pointless. I've said it before. We should just leave the fish how they are and enjoy them in their natural form.

I'd be interested to see how true to life their colors are...

...wasn't the color originally developed to detect pollutants in bodies of water?

omg I can't belive they are trademarking this, its just cruel, btw wouldn't thier lights stress out other fish in a community tank?

IMO there's nothing wrong with them besides the danger of them getting into the wild (though they would probably not survive - having those colors - to reproduce). It isn't cruel, the color passes on naturaly and, although it's a little annoying that these people are now benefiting from exploiting these fish, I don't see a difference between marketing these and any other man-made (ie selectively bred) strain of discus or guppy or danio or whatever. They've also done something similar with rabbits - and I'm sure several other species besides.
