Hello,

I was just wondering whether turnover in a small tank matters as much.

I'm getting a 30L tank and an external filter which is rated 150l/ph. I know this is half but I read that it is for moving debris around and spreading nutrients. But in such a small space, would I be able to get away with it? HOB aren't an option because of the lid and rim. I'd rather not use internals because I find them unsightly and they take up space. I can cut holes for externals though. I can only find the mini external from APS which seems as close as it gets otherwise it's like 1000l/ph.

Any advice?

Thanks for reading.

Try it out, providing the lighting is low you might be ok, I run a low tech with 5 x turnover.

Thanks for the reply. It will be running a 24w light. I must ask, why would the lighting effect the filter?

Your lighting is extremely high for that tank, nothing will survive with out more flow, CO2 and full fertilizers.

Hmm I changed my mind on the tank. I'm thinking the Arcadia Arc 35, 24w Ellipse Light (because that is the only affordable high light I can find). The only filter I can find is that APS 150l/ph. Ferts I will either be Neutro+ or Tropica and Co2 will be a CO2 2KG FE system. I will keep the hunt on for a suitable external filter.

I do beleive you on the whole thing, but why does the tank need more flow with that lighting? (Just out of curiosity)

I found a TetraTec EX 400 400l/h 10-80L. Think that may be the one!

It needs more flow anyway, any planted tank should have at least 10 x full tank turnover per hour to get all of the nutrients round the plants. The higher the light, the faster photosynthesis takes place, if this happens the plants need available nutrients, with low flow less nutrients are available. Neutro + is awesome, I use it and recommend to anyone. I wouldn't recommend anyone having very low flow in their planted tank till they have a fair bit of experience as it will only cause problems, with the experience you kind of have more leeway. :)

Thanks for explaining! I appreciate it. Okay so the APS mini external is off the list. I'll go for the tetratec instead. I did look at those eheim but the externals sort of look like HOB which I don't see fitting very well on a ARC tank.

Thanks for your help! :)
