I have been looking at the set ups of frontosa tanks and most seem to have large plastic or teracotta tubes. My problem is I dont really like the look of these in a tank, being round you couldnt really hide them. However I do have lying around 4 or so juwel internal filter boxes and thought maybe I could use these as having flat surfaces I could probably hide them better in between the rocks. Question is would I need to but the base off so they can swim all the way through or leave them as a cave?

ebay has a few caves i might get on of these for my plec

I do like the look of the slate caves but they dont do them big enough.

You could get some black PVC tubes, and silicone on some gravel/rocks, and lean rocks on them, so that it would be sort of hidden. I've been meaning to do this for a while, but never got around to it :/

You could do a couple of things for caves.

1. You could get some larger rock and some flat rock. Use the larger rocks as sides and the flat rocks as the tops.
here a pic of when I kept fronts. I had a cave for each front. One male and 7 females. Crappy pic I know. LOL

2. You can use PVC Pipes or terra Cotta Pots. If you don't like the look of them, try this. You will need some aquarium silicon, latex gloves, terra cotta pots or PVC pipe and dry substrate (the same as in your tank). You can take substrate from the tank, just dry it out completely. Make sure to have the substare in a container that is big enough to fit the pots or pipes. Smear the silicon all over the pots or pipes. Make sure to use the latex gloves. Otherwise, you'll have silicon on your hands for a few days. Then roll the pots or pipes in the dry substrate make sur eto cover them well. You only need to cover the outside of the pots or pipes. This should help blend teh pots/pipes with the substrate.
