110 gallon tank.. 2 Tetra Whisper EX70's
Hi TStone,
Patience is the name of the game. It took me from 5 October to 24th November to cycle my 10 Gallon tank, including the "qualifying week" of getting 0 Ammonia and 0 Nitrites in less than 12 hours. I'm not sure if my case is typical or not, I think it's probably a little on the long side.
My tank didn't start producing Nitrites until 21 October. By this stage the Nitrites were off the chart. My tip is when you first start getting Nitrites cut your Ammonia dose back to 2ppm and gradually work it back up to 4ppm. That seemed to work well for me.
And finally I had a fully cycled tank. My fish are in, they look healthy and happy and the filter is processing all of the Ammonia perfectly. It's a comfort to know they aren't being subjected to Ammonia poisoning. It's worth the wait. Take the time to pick out your fish.
Enjoy the journey,
Justin
It is ok, but not usually necessary. There are some times when it is appropriate, but don't worry about it for quite some time.
