Wait and test. Wait and test. Wait and test. :D

you got it.

Hi TStone,

Patience is the name of the game. It took me from 5 October to 24th November to cycle my 10 Gallon tank, including the "qualifying week" of getting 0 Ammonia and 0 Nitrites in less than 12 hours. I'm not sure if my case is typical or not, I think it's probably a little on the long side.

My tank didn't start producing Nitrites until 21 October. By this stage the Nitrites were off the chart. My tip is when you first start getting Nitrites cut your Ammonia dose back to 2ppm and gradually work it back up to 4ppm. That seemed to work well for me.

And finally I had a fully cycled tank. My fish are in, they look healthy and happy and the filter is processing all of the Ammonia perfectly. It's a comfort to know they aren't being subjected to Ammonia poisoning. It's worth the wait. Take the time to pick out your fish.

Enjoy the journey,

Justin

Thank you very much! I'll keep your tips in mind

Is it okay to do a water change while cycling? If so, can I do any percent? Like 20% water change or 75% water change

It is ok, but not usually necessary. There are some times when it is appropriate, but don't worry about it for quite some time.

Don't worry, you'll get some practice when you need it. No need to mess with things unnecessarily.

Be straight and ask. Could be someone on here, there is a list of members willing to donate media. Try your LFS they may let you have some to seed the filter. Ask the shop if there are other fish keepers in your area that may help.

No harm in asking, worst situation you continue as you are.

I know its a 'proper' route but to be honest, i cheated and managed to purchase a fully cycled filter from the forum. 120+ mile round trip to pick it up mind . But that ment fish soonest, :hyper: No 6 weeks of water change and testing.

From that i have now seeded 2 other tanks 1 my daughters and a friends tank (minor whoops when his missus cleaned the filter for him, in the sink :X )

I looked on here and there was no one in my area... one guy but he has been inactive for about a year..
if my lfs will sell me one or let me use one, will I have to do any further cycling? And when I call my lfs... just say "do yo have any mature media you could sell me or let me use?"
