Many geographical colour variants of the Spilurum exist in the wild. These include
The Cutteri (which is now considered a synonym, not a separate species), a fish with a spectacular neon blue horizontal strip across the flanks.
The Guatemalan Red-head, which as the name suggests, sports a reddish head, along with a partially red coloured dorsal fin.
Some variants from the northern part of their range have an overall light green body colour with maroon heads and vertical bars. And much sought after is the Lago Izabal strain which has a yellow head, throat and underside, with a maroon dorsal fin and a bright blue-green anal fin.
