Since cleaning, cycling and moving my fish back to my 29 gal. tank, I decided to try some live plants again. Hopefully I'm making better choices than I have before.

So far, I have a wisteria, ludwigia, Thai onion and an Amazon sword. I'll soon be adding some Java moss, but I still have to attach it to something.

I have regular aquarium gravel in the tank.

Light is a flourescent plant/aquarium bulb, wattage unknown at this time. (Why isn't it written on the bulb?!?!) It's on about 12 hours a day. No direct sun reaches the tank.

Today I bought and used the recommended amount of Seachem Flourish. I looked at some Flourish plant tabs but didn't know if they were necessary or not so I didn't get them.

I'd rather not use CO2.

Am I off to a good start?

Thanks.

the setup is certainly on the right track to grow plants, just with the light make sure you know the wattage. You can usually tell by the length of the tube as tube length correlates with Watts (have a check on the internet or google it up ) also with the light i would lower it about a couple hours . around 8-10 hours ,

Thanks for responding!

It's a 24" "wide spectrum" bulb, which seems to probably be a 20 watt. :( Probably not bright enough?

Should I get plant tabs in addition to the Flourish liquid? The gravel was just completely cleaned when I redid the tank.

Bumping this up...

I need to find out if I need to look into a brighter bulb and the plant tabs...and if so, what wattage and what brand? Thanks!!

the root tabs certainly would help the amazon swords as they are heavy root feeders. Since you only have normal gravel i would suggest you add roottabs , this will provide your plants with iron and minerals. Light however is more important than ferts. Try to aim for something between 40 to 50~ watt for your 29 tank. anything higher and you will be in messy territory with algae
